The Best Ways to Enjoy a Stroopwafel
The cup trick, a dessert upgrade, or simply fresh and warm. Our favourite ways to eat a stroopwafel.
By Daniel MellicovskyBaker and owner, Melly's Stroopwafels

The stroopwafel is loved around the world not just for its sweet caramel filling but for how many ways there are to enjoy it. Paired with a hot drink or built into a dessert, each method brings out something different. Here are our favourite ways to eat a stroopwafel.
Over a coffee or tea
The most cherished way to enjoy a stroopwafel is over a hot cup of coffee or tea. Rest the waffle on top of the steaming cup for a minute. The heat softens the caramel inside and makes the whole thing gooey and aromatic. The contrast between the hot drink and the warm, sweet waffle turns a simple snack into a small ritual, perfect for a slow morning or an afternoon break.
As a dessert
As a dessert, stroopwafels become something more sophisticated. Sandwich a scoop of vanilla ice cream between two mini stroopwafels, scatter pieces over warm apple crumble, or drizzle one with chocolate or caramel sauce. Crumbled over a sundae they add a lovely crunch. For full recipes, try our stroopwafel tiramisu or stroopwafel trifle.
Fresh and warm
There is nothing quite like a stroopwafel straight off the iron. The aroma of toasted waffle and cinnamon with sweet, buttery caramel is hard to resist. Fresh, the edges are slightly crisp and the centre soft and chewy, and the warmth makes the caramel melt in your mouth in a way pre-packed waffles rarely manage. That is exactly how we serve them at Melly's in Amsterdam, where you can also pick from our range of toppings or make one yourself at our workshop.
